A gasification product gas with a H2 content over 75 vol-% and an heating value of 13 MJ/m³stp-dry basis has been obtained with the absorption enhanced reforming of biomass. The Absorption Enhanced Reforming (AER) process involves two coupled fluidised beds: a gasifier and a regenerator (calciner). The in-situ absorption of carbon dioxide by a sorbent (CaO) during steam gasification in the AER reactor provides the heat necessary for the endothermic gasification reactions. Due to the CO2 capturing the equilibrium of the water-gas-shift reaction is shifted to the hydrogen product. As a result of the CO2 in-situ capturing, the hydrogen concentration is over 75 vol% in the AER product gas. The used sorbent is then transferred to a regeneration reactor where the CaCO3 is calcined and recycled back to the gasifier. This paper was carried out as sub-project of a German national project called ”Fuel Flexibility” (part of the national platform BtG (Biomass to Gas), which focuses on the identification of low cost fuels from local areas to be used as a feedstock in a 10 MWth AER -demonstration plant located at Geislingen, Germany. This paper shows the preliminary results of the first experimental phase of the project. Within the first experimental phase, nine different kinds of dried fuels were gasified in batch mode in AER mode. A local limestone was used as the CO2-sorbent. The aim of this experimental phase is to get basic information about product gas yield, gas composition, CGE, and tar concentration as well as the carbon conversion calculated by a total mass balance.
