The paper describes results from experiments conducted with two small biomass appliances of different technology level: an automatic stove (8 kW) fed with two kinds of pellets (certified and low quality), and modern closed fireplace (11 kW) fed with two different wood species (beech and robinia wood). During the tests have been determined emission factors for gaseous exhaust components (CO, CO2, O2, NOx, SO2 and VOC) and total solid particles including nanoparticles have been determined. Gases have been extracted from a dilution tunnel at a temperature around 35°C. Results strictly depend on the technology but also on the fuels used. Certified pellet guarantees best performances of the appliance also in terms of ultrafine particles number concentration. Robinia wood is more difficult to burn and determines worse environmental impact of the plant in which it is used.
