For the fast pyrolysis a process development unit (PDU) for a continuous biomass throughput of 1020 kg/h has been planned, built and is currently being operated at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. A broad feedstock variety of several biomass residues has been studied. Straw chops or other small, dry biomass particles are mixed with an excess of a hot heat carrier in a twin screw mixer reactor with two rotating screws (LR-mixer reactor). The biomass particles are rapidly pyrolysed within a few seconds. At a reaction temperature of 500 °C and fast vapour condensation, little char and gas, but larger yields of liquids, are obtained. The PDU experiments are used to optimize equipment and processing options and to systematically accumulate operating experience with various biomass types. Pyrolysis char and condensates are used to produce a pumpable suspension called biosyncrude for pressurised entrained flow gasification. Therefore the purity requirements are low and permit some simplifications of the fast pyrolysis process. The design of the fast pyrolysis facility is presented. Furthermore educt composition, product yields and higher heating values of the biomass and their pyrolysis products respectively are compared.
