Biomass densification through a pelleting machine conveys benefits such as reduced dust emissions and reduced transportation and storage costs. Pellets produced with low mechanical strength characteristics result in fragmentation and abrasion leading to a low efficiency product. The efficiency of the pelletisation process can be determined with the help of the parameters durability (abrasion) and strength (diametrical compression tests). The durability and the strength parameters give the most important physical quality of pellets. The pellets (8 mm in diameter) were prepared using an industrial pelleting machine (Paladin) and a laboratory pelleting machine (Bepex). Different durability tests have been carried out with two different tumbling devices according to two different norms (ASAE S 269.4 and the Swedish Norm SS 187120). The durability tests were performed with variation in time (5, 10 and 20 min). The strength of the pellets was determined with the help of a universal testing machine (Zwick Roell). The fragmentation of the pellets was carried out with the help of a pendulum hardness testing device. The results showed that 500 gm of pellet sample is appropriate for the tumbling devices chosen. The quadratic and octagonal crates showed a corelation of 1:2. The abrasion values and the strength values show a good correlation with each other. The fragmentation results showed an interrelationship between the impact resistance and abrasion of the pellets.
