The market development for densified products, such as pellets or briquettes, is actually undergoing an increase in regions of southwestern Europe, such as Extremadura (Spain). There are many reasons which have promoted this development such as the involvement of the Public Administrations through subsidies, the improvement in logistics, manufacturing in areas which are close to the final consumers (due to the opening of nearby factories), the fact the consumer has greater information and knowledge of this kind of energies, etc. However, all these factors are meaningless if the final product quality does not satisfy the customer requirements. In this work two types of pellets were analyzed, a commercial pellet and a pellet manufactured in the laboratory, both from wastes from Extremadura. Their characteristics were compared to the limits recommended by European standards related to solid biofuels. The analyses (proximate and ultimate analysis, calorific value, durability, bulk density) and the emissions of the gases released during the combustion (carried out in a pellet stove) indicate that, although they are suitable for consumption, further research work has to be done to achieve an optimal quality for the pellets manufactured and commercialized in the European market. According to this, it would be necessary to improve and require a more exhaustive development of the collection and production processes.
