Sustainable produced hydrogen seems to be a promising energy carrier and storage media in a future energy scenario. In that context photobiological hydrogen is called to be an optimal process, because it produces hydrogen only with the help of sunlight and water. The evolution of photobiological hydrogen production is momentary on a laboratory scale. To optimize the process a new organism based on a cyanobacterium will be created on a biotechnological way. To design scaled up reactors for this organism a simulation model was created that simulates the flow behavior in the reactor with the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics. The results of the simulation support the development and give conclusions on specific parameters of the new organism. A Life Cycle Assessment of the process was accomplished to create technological and ecological key figures. The results of this assessment show that by the actual hydrogen production rate of 5 ml hydrogen per liter algae suspension and hour the process cannot compete to other technologies. The assessment shows that with an increased production rate with a factor of at least 100 and a scaled up photobioreactor the technology can be competitive.
