Biomass is a significant renewable energy potential in Serbia. Regarding the significant energy potential of biomass and the obligations, Serbia adopted Biomass Action Plan (BAP) in 2010. BAP defines strategies of biomass utilization, as well as, the problems in biomass utilization and activities to overcome them. Based on previously implemented studies, BAP defined the most promising opportunities for biomass utilization, which include among other production and utilization of pellets. The estimation is that annual pellet production could reach 80,000 t in 2012. Estimated technically usable annual energy potential of biomass from forestry and wood industry, determined pursuant to FAO methodology, is 1.5M toe. The paper shows development and current situation regarding production, market and domestic consumption of wood pellets. Surveying of market condition is also supplemented with the analysis of pellet quality produced in domestic factories. The second part of the paper gives results of the analysis of available furnaces and boilers for pellet combustion (producer, type of furnace/boiler, thermal and environmental characteristics, prices, etc.). Based on the results obtained from previous analyses, estimation of opportunities for future development of pellet production and utilization in Serbia is given, as well as, the problems that need to be overcome in order to provide wider utilization of this fuel type.
