An increased utilization of biofuels offers a promising way to cope with the growing energy demand for the transport and mobility sector worldwide. At the same time, biofuels are to offer benefits like lower greenhouse gas emissions, improved energy security, rural development opportunities and long-term income generation for farmers. However, the improper production of biofuels might also end up in higher GHG emissions and a variety of serious environmental, economic and social disadvantages. Therefore, it needs to be assured that biofuels are produced in a socially, environmentally and economically friendly way. This will also lead to an increased public acceptance and appreciation which is vital for the future success of biofuels in general. In order to achieve this, the preferred and widely accepted strategy is to develop and implement sustainability standards and certification schemes. There are various opportunities and challenges that are related to the certification of biofuels. This paper is to present an overview to the most relevant aspects.
