As electricity supply by biogas plants may contribute to a reduction of CO2 emission but is also in discussion concerning acceptance and mono-cultures, the assessment of the environmental aspects of specific biogas plants in the regional context is an important issue. Therefore, a project has been initiated to carry out a life cycle assessment of specific biogas plants integrated in four regions of Lower Saxony in Germany. The chosen regions represent four typical agricultural sectors: field cropping, granivore, dairy farm and cultivation of marginal sites. The aim of this study is to derive regional related statements concerning the ecological benefit and optimization potentials of biogas plants.
