This work presents results about the characterization of the biomass fuel, operating conditions and the characterization and management options of the ash produced in a Portuguese thermal power plant with a bubbling fluidized bed combustor (BFBC). The biomass used as fuel is a mixture of forest biomass residues (FBR), and was characterized considering thermochemical properties (proximate and elemental analysis, LHV, inorganic composition). Typical operating conditions of the BFBC (50 MWth) were characterized, namely the typical temperature profile along the combustion system and flue gas composition. Bottom ashes and fly ashes were characterized considering physical-chemical parameters (size, chemical composition, leachability, pH, conductivity) and also ecotoxicological evaluation. Management options for the ashes have been evaluated, including material valorization as soil amendment and incorporation in construction materials. The improvement of the quality of the FBR used as fuel is essential to increase the performance of the thermal plant; an important step includes proper FBR management at the forest. Preliminary results about material valorization of the ashes reveal that ash recycling to forest soil and the incorporation in construction materials are both suitable options, but need to be developed in order to minimize environmental impacts and to accomplish construction materials standards.
