Energy from biomass is increasingly important for the on-demand provisioning of heat and electricity in Germany. To avoid competing uses for food production and ecologically negative effects on the biomass supply, there is a focus on the energetic usage of residues. In this context, concepts for nature-friendly energy utilization of grass and reeds on the example of the Havelland region have been developed. The project focuses on grass from extensively managed grasslands and reeds from the maintenance work at waterways. Especially the fact that these substrates are often available in an already concentrated form, and further use is not given, makes them interesting for energy production processes. Therefore technical possibilities for generating energy from grass have been analyzed. Based on this information, complete utilization concepts - from grassland to biogas plant / to heating plant – have been developed and evaluated in regard to environmental and economic factors. The results show that such plants can be operated profitably while there is a high greenhouse gas reduction potential. However, for some technical concepts, further developments are necessary to transfer them into practice.
