Some preliminary tests were carried out in order to evaluate the technical feasibility of a catalytic gas cleaning system in the gasification of Cynara cardunculus L. It is well known that this fuel is a very problematic biomass due to the high content of nitrogen, chlorine and alkali (K and Na) in its composition. In order to minimize operational problems, blends of cardoon and small pine wood chips were used as feedstock. The main components of the gasification gas at the gasifier exit seems to be unaffected by the variation of the amount of Cynara, obtaining a LHV between 6.5-7.0 MJ/Nm3db. The same is observed for tar content. It is not influenced by the addition of higher amounts of Cynara, obtaining tar contents between 5.8-6.5 g/Nm3. After the monolithic reactor, it is observed a decrease in the LHV with values around 5.4-5.7 MJ/ Nm3db, due to the partial combustion of the gasification gas. Tar conversion as high as 88 % was achieved in test CRD-01, observing a light decrease in test CRD-02. Nevertheless, a drastic decrease of the tar conversion was found in test CRD-03 achieving a conversion of 61 %.
