This poem was first drafted in the autumn of 1917, and was cited by Siegfried Sassoon in a letter to Edward Marsh on 22 December 1917 as Robert Graves' 'most sustained effort'. Part of a Typescript of 'The Patchwork Flag', which included 38 examples of war and children's verses, with Robert Graves' manuscript corrections. Compiled with Nancy Nicholson. Sent also to Edward Marsh. Contains one two-sided leaf of a manuscript comments by Siegfried Sassoon, dated 21st August (1918)" Not published after Graves received criticism both from Sassoon And Robert Ross.
