The European Database of Seismogenic Faults (EDSF) was compiled in the framework of the EU Project SHARE, Work Package 3, Task 3.2. EDSF includes only faults that are deemed to be capable of generating earthquakes of magnitude equal to or larger than 5.5 and aims at ensuring a homogenous input for use in ground-shaking hazard assessment in the Euro-Mediterranean area. Several research institutions participated in this effort with the contribution of many scientists (see the Database section for a full list). The EDSF database and website are hosted and maintained by INGV.
The compilation of EDSF relies heavily on the scientific literature on active faults, seismotectonics, paleoseismology, tectonic geomorphology, and other disciplines related to active tectonics. The area covered by EDSF was subdivided into seven regions in which scientists led the collection of data from local experts to preserve and enhance the legacy of local knowledge in the different tectonic settings. Data were initially collected during regional meetings, then revised in follow-up sessions, and finally merged into a harmonized dataset.
Every prescribed parameter of a seismogenic fault has a quality mark, and the entire record is double-checked for internal consistency (e.g., size of the source vs. expected earthquake magnitude). Data uncertainties are handled by assigning a range of values to each parameter of a seismogenic fault to capture its aleatoric variability. Different proposals of seismogenic faults in overlapping areas across regional boundaries were reconciled to ensure homogeneity of data collection.
